The basic formula is simple: length x depth = square inches, then divide by 144 to get square feet. Since there are 144 square inches in 1 square foot, that conversion is what turns your tape-measure numbers into a usable countertop estimate.

For example, if one countertop section is 96 inches long and 25.5 inches deep, the math is 96 x 25.5 = 2,448 square inches. Divide 2,448 by 144 and you get 17 square feet.

That gives you the area for one rectangular section. Most kitchens are not one rectangle, though. You may have an L-shape, an island, a bar top, a cooktop cutout, or a sink area. The safest approach is to break the layout into separate rectangles, calculate each one, then add them together.
