Flooring Underlayment Guide for Every Floor

A new waterproof vinyl floor can still feel noisy, shift at the seams, or fail early if the layer below it is wrong. This flooring underlayment guide cuts through the confusing labels and helps you buy for the floor, subfloor, and room you actually have - not for a feature you do not need.
Underlayment is not an automatic add-on. Some floors need it, some have it attached, and some installation systems specifically prohibit it. Get the decision right before materials arrive, because correcting a bad base after the floor is installed is expensive.
What Flooring Underlayment Actually Does
Underlayment is the material installed between the subfloor and certain flooring products. Depending on the product, it can soften sound, reduce minor subfloor imperfections, add a little cushion underfoot, and help control moisture vapor coming up through concrete.
Those functions are different, and one product does not always handle all of them equally well. A thick foam pad may feel comfortable but offer weak moisture protection. A heavy vapor barrier may help on a slab but do little for sound. The best value is the underlayment that meets the flooring manufacturer's requirements without paying extra for features your installation cannot use.
Do not confuse underlayment with a subfloor repair. It cannot fix plywood that is loose, concrete that is badly uneven, or a floor that slopes across the room. It may hide tiny texture variations, but it will not create the flat, stable surface required for a quality installation.
Start With the Installation Method
The flooring installation method determines the first part of the answer. Before comparing thickness, sound ratings, or price, check whether your floor floats, glues down, nails down, or uses tile mortar.
Floating floors need the right amount of cushion
Floating laminate, hybrid vinyl, and many click-lock vinyl plank floors usually require an underlayment unless a pad is already attached to the planks. The floor needs a consistent base that supports the locking system without restricting its ability to expand and contract.
More padding is not automatically better. An underlayment that is too thick or too soft can let planks flex when walked on. That movement can stress click-lock joints, create gaps, and lead to broken edges. Follow the maximum thickness and density listed in the flooring specifications, especially with rigid-core vinyl and laminate.
Glue-down flooring generally needs no underlayment
Glue-down vinyl plank, glue-down wood, and many commercial flooring products are designed to bond directly to a properly prepared subfloor. Installing foam or a floating pad underneath defeats the adhesive system and can void the warranty.
That does not mean the subfloor gets less attention. Glue-down floors demand a clean, flat, dry surface. On concrete, moisture testing and the correct moisture-control system may still be necessary, but that is a separate preparation step from standard underlayment.
Nail-down wood relies on the subfloor
Traditional nail-down or staple-down wood flooring is fastened through the flooring and into a wood subfloor. Builders often use rosin paper or an approved vapor retarder, depending on the wood product and installation instructions. Soft foam underlayment does not belong under a nailed floor because it prevents a secure fastening base.
Tile needs a setting system, not a padded layer
Ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone tile require a firm, stable base. Depending on the project, that may mean cement board, an uncoupling membrane, a crack-isolation membrane, or a properly prepared concrete slab. These materials perform a different job than laminate or vinyl underlayment. Tile can crack when installed over a soft, compressible pad.
Match the Underlayment to Your Subfloor
The subfloor matters just as much as the flooring type. Wood and concrete create different risks, and rooms below grade deserve extra attention.
A wood subfloor usually calls for sound control, light cushioning where approved, and a flat surface. Check for loose panels, squeaks, fastener heads, and uneven joints before rolling anything out. A floating floor will often magnify movement below it, so fix the source rather than hoping underlayment will quiet it down.
Concrete can release moisture even when it looks completely dry. Basements, first-floor slabs, garages converted to living space, and Florida homes on concrete slabs all deserve a moisture plan. If your flooring manufacturer requires a vapor barrier or specifies a moisture-vapor transmission limit, follow it exactly. Use approved tape to seal seams and run the barrier according to the instructions, without punctures or open gaps.
If the concrete is uneven, use an appropriate patch or self-leveling product before installation. Underlayment should lie flat. Wrinkles, overlapping seams, debris, and high spots can telegraph through the finished floor or put pressure on locking joints.
Choosing Underlayment for Popular Flooring Types
Waterproof vinyl and hybrid vinyl
Many waterproof vinyl and hybrid vinyl products include an attached pad. If yours does, do not add another soft layer unless the manufacturer clearly allows it. Double padding is a common mistake that can make the floor feel unstable and put the click system at risk.
For products without an attached pad, use an underlayment made for luxury vinyl or rigid-core flooring. It should be thin, dense, and approved for the specific floor. If you are installing over concrete, choose a compatible product with moisture protection or install the required vapor barrier separately.
Waterproof laminate
Waterproof laminate typically benefits from underlayment that provides sound reduction and, over concrete, moisture protection. But water-resistant flooring is not a substitute for a vapor barrier. The word “waterproof” describes the flooring surface and core performance, not necessarily the conditions below the planks.
Look for a laminate-rated product with enough density to support the locking system. Avoid using leftover carpet pad, felt, or generic foam because it is cheap. Saving a few dollars on the layer underneath can cost far more if the floor develops seam problems.
Engineered wood
Engineered wood can be floated, glued down, or nailed down, and each method uses a different system. A floating engineered wood floor may use a manufacturer-approved underlayment. A glue-down installation needs the correct adhesive and subfloor preparation. A nail-down installation may need an approved vapor retarder over wood subflooring.
This is one category where installation instructions matter more than habits from a previous project. Two engineered wood products can look similar but have very different requirements.
Read the Specs That Protect Your Budget
Retail labels can make every roll of underlayment sound premium. Focus on the specifications that affect your installation instead of paying for broad marketing claims.
For sound reduction, look for ratings such as IIC and STC, especially in condos, upstairs rooms, and multifamily properties. Higher ratings can help, but the final result depends on the complete floor and ceiling assembly, not the underlayment alone. Building or HOA requirements may also set a minimum rating.
For moisture control, confirm whether the product includes an integrated vapor barrier and whether it is approved for concrete slabs. For thickness, stay inside the flooring manufacturer's limits. For thermal performance, consider whether the project has radiant heat and verify that the flooring, underlayment, and heating system are all approved to work together.
Also check whether the underlayment is rated for the traffic level and flooring type you are installing. A product intended for laminate is not automatically suitable for vinyl plank, and a residential pad may not meet the needs of a busy rental or commercial space.
Avoid These Costly Underlayment Mistakes
The fastest way to overspend is buying underlayment before confirming the flooring instructions. The next fastest is using one roll for every room and every material. A tile bathroom, glue-down vinyl kitchen, and floating laminate bedroom do not use the same base layer.
Do not install over wet concrete, dirty subfloors, or surfaces with serious low spots. Do not overlap seams unless the product instructions call for it. Do not run floating-floor underlayment up the wall where it can interfere with expansion space, baseboards, or molding. And do not skip moisture protection simply because the room is above ground level - concrete can still transfer moisture into flooring.
Measure the project carefully, including closets and waste allowance, then buy enough material to complete the job with consistent coverage.
